Cannabis’s major advantage over conventional treatments is that it has almost zero incidences of side effects compared with pharmaceuticals, which include seizures, hallucinations, slowed heartbeat, comas and even death.  Due to a longstanding prohibition of Cannabis and it’s frankly ridiculous scheduling which states outright that there is no medicinal benefit, extensive studies are often hampered by red tape and very expensive and limited trials. Nevertheless, there exists sufficient scientific evidence to prove the positive correlation between Cannabis and muscle spasm treatment.

A clinical trial conducted at the University of California, San Diego school of Medicine in 2012, involved 30 patients suffering from walking impairment due to multiple sclerosis were given either Cannabis or a placebo. The subjects who smoked Cannabis saw their spasticity reduce by a third, over those who were given a placebo. There were additional benefits in terms of muscle-related pain reduction and other quality-of-life improvements (Corey-Bloom et al., 2012).

The mechanism by which Cannabis relieves muscle spasms is not clearly understood but scientists believe that cannabinoids, particularly CBD stimulate the motor nerve receptors. The anti-inflammatory action may also help to ease pressure on receptors, allowing impulses to pass uninhibited (Vaney et al., 2004). Depending on the type of spasms and additional symptoms that one is suffering, different forms and strains of Cannabis will have varying degrees of success.

Generally, vaped Cannabis brings faster relief and has less side effects than eaten or topical varieties simply because dosage and length of the high is more controlled than certain forms of ingestion. Since CBD is the cannabinoid that is more directly involved in relieving spasms, it is often better to go with CBD-high strains or to supplement high THC strains with high quality CBD oil. When spasms are accompanied by pain and other types of discomfort, a closer balance between CBD and THC is ideal. Cannabis can also be used in conjunction with normal treatments as a way of alleviating the negative effects that they precipitate.
