There is no known cure for the disease and patients rely on the three drugs just to deal with the symptoms. Although there is a relative scarcity of scientific evidence on the curative relationship between Cannabis and fibromyalgia, existing studies indicate very positive results as to it’s efficacy in treating not only symptoms but as a potential cure for the disease.

An online survey conducted by the National Pain Foundation found that Cannabis had a much higher efficacy rate in treating fibromyalgia than any approved conventional drug. In the survey more than 1300 fibromyalgia patients were asked to rate the effectiveness of the FDA approved drug they used and for those who had used Cannabis (30%), to rate its efficacy. 60%, 61% and 68% of the patients found Cymbalta, Lyrica and Savella to be completely ineffective. On the other hand, 62% of those who had tried cannabis found it very effective, 33% found it a little helpful and only 5% said it did not work at all (Anson, 2014).

These results were supported by a clinical trial of 56 patients in which Cannabis users reported a decrease in pain and stiffness, better sleep, greater relaxation and a higher feeling of well being after 2 hours of Cannabis use (Fiz, Durán, Capellà, Carbonell, & Farré, 2011).

Like many conditions that are treatable with Cannabis, the deficiency of endo-cannabinoids –compounds found in the body that are similar to cannabinoids in Cannabis- is believed to be an underlying factor of fibromyalgia manifestation (Russo, 2016). Introducing CBD or THC into the body helps to alleviate this deficiency and reduce symptoms of the disease. The combination of the two is believed to be even more effective than one or the other and considering Cannabinoids have an entourage effect both with other cannabinoids and terpenes found in the plant, the potential for disease management and treatment becomes potentially exponential.

Different combinations of these two cannabinoids yield varying results for different individuals, and it is important to consider the specific symptoms that are present when choosing between strains. Although little scientific insight exists on which method of cannabis intake is more effective, it is generally known that inhalation and tinctures produces very fast effects, while eating produces slower but longer lasting effects. There are also topical pain patches and creams which gradually and steadily release cannabinoids into the body.
