Many modern studies continue to support this notion. One of the most prominent of these studies was conducted at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy in 2016. The study involved 121 adult who had been diagnosed with migraine headaches. The patients were administered with different types and doses of Cannabis for an average of 27 weeks, and the intensity and frequency of their migraines recorded.

39.7 % of patients reported experiencing positive results. Half (24) of these patients reported the positive effects as the prevention of headaches with a reduction of frequency, while another 14 patients reported migraine abortions.  On average, the frequency of migraines decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 incidences per month. 103 patients (85.3%) reported a reduction in the frequency of migraines. 11.6 percent of the patients reported experiencing negative side effects(Rhyne, Anderson, Gedde, & Borgelt, 2016).

The working mechanism of Cannabis in reducing migraines is not entirely understood but scientists speculate that it has to do with supplementing the body’s natural endocannabinoid. These chemicals, which are very similar to cannabinoids found in Cannabis, modulate the neural pathways of pain in the CNS. The results of a 2008 study suggested that migraine patients have a deficiency of endocannabinoids, a situation that Cannabis use theoretically corrects (Wenk, 2013).

The Skaggs study also provided valuable insight into which methods of intake produced better results. Inhaled marijuana (smoked or vaporized) was shown to have quicker action and more efficacy in aborting migraines. On the other hand, the onset of benefits from edible Cannabis was slower but its effects were more pronounced and longer lasting, attributed to the slower absorption and removal from the body. Additionally, ingested Cannabis produced more negative effects (mainly sleepiness and intense psychedelic effects) than the inhaled or topical forms. Medical Cannabis experts recommend CBD-high strains because of their lower psychedelic potential however high CBD strains can be as or more effective but of course they come with greater psychoactivity.
