For many patients, joint pains are synonymous with various forms of arthritis, and most scientific research on joint pains has centered on arthritic joint pains. However, it is possible to generalize these results to most joint pains because the relief mechanism is similar.
A 2006 study compared the effectiveness of a pharmaceutical grade Cannabis-derivative named Sativex with that of a placebo in treating joint pains caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The study sampled 58 patients, 31 of whom were placed on Sativex and the other 27 placed on a placebo over a period of five weeks. The drug was administered as an oromucusal spray in the evening and assessment taken the following morning.
The Sativex group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group in pain scores throughout the course of treatment. There were also much fewer incidences of side effects in the Sativex group. Only two patients (6%) in the Sativex group had complications that could be rated as severe while six patients (22%) in the control group experienced serious complications, with three subjects having to withdraw from the study(Blake, 2006).
These results offer hope for patients of various joint problems who are forced to rely on NSAIDs, which a majority of patients find to be ineffective in the long term, and can be more addictive than heroin.
The action of cannabinoids, the active compounds in Cannabis is the cornerstone to the plant’s role in relieving joint pains. Two of the most important cannabinoids THC and CBD interact with CB2 receptors in the immune system to induce inflammation-reducing action. Additionally, receptors in the CNS bind to cannabinoids to change pain pathways in a way that reduces pain perception. Although both THC and CBD are effective in fighting pain, CBD-high strains are often recommended for patients who are keen on avoiding the psychoactive effects of cannabis (Gui et al., 2014).
