The treatment of neuropathic pain, an unpleasant condition attributed to nerve damage, has long relied on opioids which sometimes precipitate effects that are worse than the disease itself. As the social stigma associated with Cannabis continues to wear off, the treatment of neuropathic pain is one of the areas where the benefits of the plant have become very apparent. Recent studies have produced scientific evidence that support the efficacy of the plant in managing the condition as well as the actual side effects of conventional treatments.

A 2007 study researching the effectiveness of Cannabis in treating neuropathic pain associated with HIV presents one of the most prominent cases for the plant. The study, spearheaded by researchers at the University of California involved 50 subjects who were randomly placed on Cannabis (3.65% THC concentration) or placebo cigarettes three times a day for 5 days. The response to their respective regimes was then recorded using a standardized chronic pain rating system.
34 percent of the patients who smoked Cannabis reported a reduction in daily pain, compared to 17 percent in the placebo group. 52 % of patients in the Cannabis group achieved greater than 30 percent reduction in pain, while 24% in the control group reached the same outcome. The median pain reduction for the first dosage was 72% for those who used the Cannabis cigarette, compared to just 15% among the placebo group. There were no adverse reactions that were reported (Abrams et al., 2007).
Many studies have produced results that are very consistent with these findings. Another study, conducted in 2014 found that opioid-related deaths were 25% lower in US states that had legalized Cannabis use, indicating that Cannabis or a combination of Cannabis and opioid regimes are safer alternatives than opioids alone (Bachhuber, Saloner, Cunningham & Barry, 2014).
Scientific insight into the efficacy of Cannabis, depending on the method of delivery is relatively scarce. However, smoked or vaped Cannabis is a preference for most patients and medics. The absorption and synthesis of oral Cannabis is known to be slow and unpredictable but there are methods of ingestion that do not lead to strong psychoactive effects such as micro-dosing tinctures or suppositories.
For patients who are uncomfortable with smoking, there are vaporizers and inhalers, which are just as effective as smoking without the harmful inhalation of combusted plant matter. (McCaffrey, 2014). The analgesic and tissue damage-healing properties of the cannabinoids THC and CBD are responsible for the action of Cannabis against neuropathic pain.
