The study sampled 21 patients with severe Crohn’s. 11 of those patients smoked two joints of Cannabis each with 115 mg of THC for eight weeks while the other 10 patients received a placebo. 5 of the 11 patients taking cannabis experienced complete remission of symptoms while 1 out of 10 in the control group had the same outcome. A further five patients in the cannabis group experienced a clinical response, with an improvement in pain, appetite and sleep.

That translates to an efficacy rate of 90% in the cannabis group. Only 4 (40%) of the patients in the control group showed any significant level of clinical response. Negative side effects associated with conventional Crohn’s pharmaceuticals were absent in all the patients who participated in the study (Naftali et al., 2013).

An earlier study from the University of Tel Aviv published in 2011 had found significant improvements in general health perceptions, pain, depression and other indicators after three months of treatment with inhaled Cannabis. The patients, who numbered 13 in total, experienced an average weight gain of 4.3 kg and a rise of 1.4 in BMI (Lahat, Lang, & Ben-Horin, 2011).

The mechanism behind these benefits is largely connected to Cannabis’s effectiveness in fighting intestinal inflammation. For this reason, Cannabis is also touted as a great treatment for other inflammatory bowel disorders such as colitis (HelloMD, 2015). Research on the most efficient Cannabis strains is somewhat subjective and effect variations based on the strain may be dependent on the individual.

The difference in effects of different strains for both medical and recreational use continues to be a subject of debate that will need further research to settle. We have collected data from many different Crohn’s disease sufferers who have successfully utilized Cannabis as a viable treatment and we have provided this shortlist in the table above.
