Many baby boomers around the world are using Cannabis again, this time for medical use after a long hiatus and many of them say that the Cannabis today is nothing like what they used to smoke back when they were teenagers.
Quite often there is some truth in their statement and that is because it’s likely that all they had available to them at the time were landrace strains.
What are Landrace Strains?
Landrace strains are strains of Cannabis which are indiginous to a certain region and have not had their genetics tampered with by human hands. They are considered the ”pure” strains and every modern hybrid will be able to trace their lineage back to landrace strains.
Landrace strains have not been bred with any other variety of cannabis other than their own and this inbreeding often leads to very robust and uniform plants with little variation in the offspring.
Years of breeding these landrace strains with other landrace strains and hybrids has led to new characteristics in the plants and many old school smokers feel that something ”is lost” with the modern hybrids. It makes sense when you think about it, yes you may be getting the relaxation of an indica with the creativity of a sativa at the same time but sometimes the full experience would be preferable.
A landrace strain will almost always be either 100% sativa or 100% indica. There are exceptions but that is the general rule and if you are looking for the unadulterated experience of either a ”pure” sativa or ”pure” indica, landrace strains are definitely worth trying.
Over the years the hybrids have been getting stronger but that is mainly because breeders were looking to increase THC production and that has been their focus for some time. With the emergence of the medical sector, other cannabinoids such as CBD and even CBG and CBC are becoming increasingly in demand as we uncover the plethora of medicinal uses for them.
This is resulting in breeding projects to increase the amounts of these cannabinoids and the focus is not only on THC as it once was.
As always with Cannabis, it’s worth exploring different strains and landrace strains are no exception. it’s hard to imagine that with the hybridization of cannabis for all these years that although much may be gained, something of the soul of the Cannabis plant may also have been lost. The overall cannabinoid profile of the plant has likely changed significantly.
Hybridization is often beneficial and breeders have been creating their own strains for a variety of reasons, such as making the plants more vigorous and robust, increasing terpene production and even fine tuning strains for certain medical conditions.
If you are using a hybrid strain that is working for you and you have it dialled in then it makes sense to keep using it but if you are still on the hunt for the perfect strain you may just find it amidst the most original and natural forms of Cannabis that are still out there.
In terms of pain relief a pure sativa would likely work really well for headaches or migraines and even fibromyalgia patients sometimes respond very well to them while someone with back pain or inflammation would usually respond very well to an indica.
