The analgesic and tissue healing properties of Cannabis have been known for millennia and the plant is now beginning to replace conventional treatments as a viable treatment for back pain. Scientific research indicates that Cannabis is effective in targeting various underlying causes of back pain.

A study conducted at the University of Colorado Spine Center compared the reported efficacy of Cannabis with that of opiates among 184 patients at the facility. 19 percent of the subjects, most of them without a prescription, used Cannabis to try to cure their back pain. 90 percent of the patients used it by smoking, while 45% and 29% used oral and vaporization techniques respectively.

89% of the patients said that Cannabis moderately or greatly relieved their pain and 81% found it to work better than opioids (Fauber, 2013). Other studies have shown Cannabis to be effective at healing damaged components in the spine and to relieve chronic pain.

The curative action of Cannabis on back pain is linked to compounds in the plant, called cannabinoids. THC and CBD, the two most prominent cannabinoids, bind with various receptors in the body in ways that relieve inflammation, promote healing and arrest abnormalities in neural synapses that all contribute to back pain.

THC is known to be more potent that other cannabinoids at relieving pain, but its psychoactive properties which vary from person to person make it difficult to prescribe with any amount of certainty by physicians. On the other hand, CBD has proven to be effective in at least one animal study in healing degenerative discs, which could be good news for patients with injury-related back pain (Silveira et al., 2014).

Patients who are sensitive to THC  should look for a strain that combines these two ingredients in a way that would maximize their respective actions, while minimizing the high. 1:1 ratio medicinal strains are a great place to start for patients who want to maintain functionality throughout the day while higher THC strains could possibly work better for debilitating pain, provided they also contain some CBD which works in synergy with THC.
